Fanjove Island

Fanjove Island is one of the six small islands which make up the Songosongo Archipelago off the Tanzanian coast. The island is only 1km long and has only one property. The coral reef around the island has had the chance to rehabilitate Over the past few years. Thus, resulting in a lovely growth, attracting a plethora of marine life off the island. Fanjove Island is also one of the last refuges for the rare coconut crabs. And it is also used by green turtles as a hatching site. The historic 1884 German lighthouse on the island is restored for guests to enjoy a stunning view from the viewing deck at the top of the lighthouse.
 
There is only one small, very understated and intimate six -cottage property on the island. Guests staying in Fanjove experience a very exclusive and personal private island escape with plenty of water-related activities. It’s the perfect escape for adventurous travelers looking for a Robinson Crusoe-esq vibe.

Coral Reef & Dive Site

Surrounding the island is a beautiful 11km stretch of coral reef. Through protection and rehabilitation over the past few years, it has resulted in growth of the corals. The corals have attracted a large variety of marine life species. At Fanjove Island, guest are fitted with a pair of goggles and snorkel upon arrival. So, feel free to jump into the azure waters for a swim.

Incredible Birdlife

Fanjove is home to approximately 40 different species of birds, mainly marine birds. From November through March the migrant birds pass through the island. It’s the best time for bird watching as the birds are in their breeding plumage. Armed with a good pair of binoculars, and stationed in a discreet lookout spot, you can appreciate the rich diversity of Fanjove’s birdlife.

Turtle Hatchings

The island is the site for green turtle nests. If guests are lucky, they can see the turtle eggs hatching and watch the baby turtles scurry from their nest down to the ocean.

Fanjove Island Nature Walks

Island Nature Walks

A nature walk is a great way to explore the island and takes approximately 45 minutes. You can either grab a map and venture out alone, or ask one of the local guides to take you around. A nature walk around the island is the best way to learn about the history and culture of Fanjove.

Coconut Crabs

A nature walk around the island may reveal the rare coconut crab. Coconut crabs are the largest living arthropods on earth, weighing up to 4kgs!

Dolphin Watching

Dolphin Watching

Sail off on a marine safari in search of the spinner and bottlenose dolphins that are around the island. Dolphin viewing can be done throughout the year.

Whale Watching

Fanjove island is along the migratory route of the Humpback Whales. During the months of October and November is the best time to try and catch sightings of these incredible mammals.

Kayaking around Fanjove Island

Kayaking

Fanjove’s 4 single kayaks provide a memorable way for guests to explore the whole main island, the bird island and the cliff system from the water.

Deep Sea Fishing

Head further out into the ocean for a chance to do some catch and release fishing. Barracuda, Kingfish, Trevally, KoleKole and Tuna could be on your line.

Dhow Sailing

Dhow Sailing

Enjoy sailing around the island in the traditional sailing vessel – the Dhow. Dhow sailing usually takes place in the late afternoon. Guests enjoy the coastal sunset with sundowners and snacks on board.

Sand bank excursions

During the low tide, the sand bank opens up for relaxation. Head out there for a half day to relax and enjoy the excursions around the sandbank. Enjoy a freshly caught seafood lunch.

Lighthouse on Fanjove Island

Historical Lighthouse

On the island is a 19th century German lighthouse. A beautiful structure on the island with the best vantage point for sweeping views. The lighthouse has been restored and you can even see the old newspapers that were used during the construction of the lighthouse. The viewing platform near the top is one of the best places on the island to enjoy a sundowner while watching the sun set and the stars come out.

Best time to visit

Fanjove is great to visit between January – March and June to December. The island has only one property which is closed during April & May during the rainy season. Warmer weather can be enjoyed between January – March and October – December. Cooler weather is between June – September.
