Why Travel in February

Why Travel in February

One of the best times to Travel to East Africa

February & March are one of the best times to go on safari in Kenya! This is also my favourite time to be out in the wild! The weather is perfect,  the crowds are less, and the wildlife sightings are just awesome. This is the time I usually go away for a few days and get my ‘Mara Fix’! I can honestly say that I’ve witnessed some of the most incredible wildlife sightings and have had some of the best photography opportunities at this time, especially with the ‘big cats’.

From wildlife and birdlife lovers to photography enthusiasts, East Africa offers the ultimate safari experience for many travellers.
Here are some of the reasons why going on safari during February & March is a great time:

  1. East Africa, particularly Kenya and Tanzania are renowned for their diverse wildlife and unforgettable safari experiences. Travelling during off-peak seasons is a great option for budget-conscious travellers as well as visitors who prefer a more authentic experience.
  2. Travelling during low season delivers excellent weather conditions and exciting game viewing opportunities.
  3. This is the off-peak tourist season, so no competing for space around the sightings and fewer crowds around jostling to get the perfect shot.
  4. Safaris are more affordable during the off-season. From packages to hotels, travelling during the low season could save you money! Flights are also generally cheaper during low season.
  5. It’s summer in East Africa. Beautiful blue skies and the equatorial sun! You can’t beat it, whether you’re in the bush or at the beach!
  6. Has the Great Wildebeest Migration been on your bucket list? Well here’s one of the best kept secrets – from January – March is one of the best times to see the migration in the Southern Serengeti. This is the calving season where almost 8,000 calves are born daily and of course such numbers of young animals are a magnet for Africa’s predators. The big cats – lions, leopards, and cheetahs – stalk the southern Serengeti along with spotted hyenas, black-backed jackals, and African wild dogs. Chances of seeing predator-prey interaction and indeed a kill are very high during the Serengeti calving season – great news for wildlife photographers if not for the wildebeest.
  7. Gorilla & Chimp Trekking are also great activities to do during this season. The permits are easily available and the dry weather is perfect for trekking.
