Large Herds of Free Roaming Elephants

Amboseli National Park is one of the last havens for large breeding herds of elephants and is home to one of the longest running elephant research projects in the world – Amboseli Trust for Elephants. The families here have been researched for over 40 years, and have long histories tracing back their lineages.

Views of Mt. Kilimanjaro

Mt. Kilimanjaro is the tallest mountain on the African continent and the highest free-standing mountain in the world. Located at the base of Mt. Kilimanjaro, Amboseli forms an iconic image, and on clear mornings and evenings, it offers spectacular views of the mountain.

Wide Range of Habitats

The Amboseli ecosystem is unique with a wide range of habitats supporting great biodiversity. The park is fed by a system of swamps from the Kilimanjaro mountain forests. This supports five diverse habitats – woodlands, savannah, wetlands, seasonal lakes and dry-lake, which host great elephant and buffalo numbers, predators, plains game and over 400 species of birds.

Best time to visit

Amboseli is a wonderful park to visit any time. The best time for animal sightings is during the dry season when the wildlife comes to the limited water sources. The dry season from June to October when it’s warm, and from January to March when it’s hot also means the park is arid and dusty.

For the bird lovers, November to January is the best time for birdwatching, as during these months, in addition to the resident birds, there is a presence of the migrating birds.

During the rainy season with the availability of water, the animals disperse, making sightings a little more difficult. The roads in the park are also likely to become muddy and more difficult to navigate.
