Mountain Gorilla Trekking

There really is no wildlife experience as amazing as an encounter with the
majestic mountain gorillas. It is an experience of a lifetime! With fewer than
1,000 Mountain Gorillas left in the wild, it is truly a privilege to see them in their
natural habitat.

This unique experience can only be done in one mountain range in the world –
the Virungas. A range of extinct volcanoes which run across the borders of three
countries – Rwanda, Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Of the three
countries, Rwanda and Uganda offer the best gorilla trekking experience.
Mountain gorillas are social and gregarious, intelligent and curious. They live in
groups led by one or more adult male silverbacks and each gorilla group has
unique characteristics making them quite different from one another.
You will be in awe at how special these primates are.

The Experience

An experience like no other. Your gorilla trek begins at the Park Headquarters where you will be assigned your gorilla family, in groups of 8 visitors. The ranger will give you a short briefing and the Dos and Don’ts of the trek. Meanwhile, trackers have already gone out earlier to find the gorillas, informing your ranger / guide their approximate location in the forest. The trek through the rainforest can be quite strenuous, though you will be assigned a trek according to your physical fitness. Visitors can hire a porter or two to assist and carry your backpack (highly recommended). Once you find your gorilla family you will spend one hour in their company, watching and photographing them as they go about their daily life. Some youngsters may even try and get close to you, but don’t worry, the ranger will be with you.

Gorilla treks take place once a day, with only 8 visitors assigned to each gorilla family. With only a limited number of permits available daily, it is advisable to book your gorilla trek permit well in advance and not to make other travel plans until your permit is paid for in full and secured. The permits are non-refundable and non-transferable.
