Wild Camping at Rangi Saba

Wild Camping at Rangi Saba

Mid July I was invited by @acouplecamping to go camping. I do enjoy camping, but I still prefer the luxuries of a tented camp! As I really wanted to get out of Nairobi (I’m sure you’ll agree this pandemic is really affecting our daily lives), I jumped at the chance to get out for a couple of days.

Getting Dinner Ready

We were invited to check out a site which is part of Rangi Saba (7 colors of the Rainbow). I packed my bag, tent and sleeping bag and hopped in the car with @acouplecamping – my brother and sister in law. The plan was for the three of us to head down towards Magadi to our usual camping spot – Olorgesailie to get some heat – Nairobi has been so cold! On the way there we stopped for our usual Nyama Choma – the best Nyama Choma by the way at Olopolos. It was a nice long relaxing lunch of Nyama Choma (BBQ goat), Ugali (Maize Meal) and Kachumbari (Tomato & Onion Salad) with some Tusker beers – a typical Kenyan meal.

After thoroughly enjoying lunch, we continued to our campsite, but we were told the campsite was not open yet… oops! Hmm, where to go and stay the night now? Magadi ’s camping sites had not yet opened, so we called Olopolos and they were really great and allowed us to camp on their grounds. The gentleman in charge was really helpful and found us an awesome spot to camp. It happened to be a school, a small enclosed area with paintings on the wall which looked like history lessons of the Maasai in the area.

Once camp was set up, it was time for our favourite safari sundowner drinks – Gin & Tonics. Anokh decided it was also a good time for a ‘bush lesson’… I don’t need to say much, but I’ve not laughed so much in a long time!

We enjoyed a lovely meal of beef chilli and rice cooked over the bonfire, and it was time for a good night’s sleep under the stars.

After breakfast the next day it was time to head to Rangi Saba’s Wild Camping Site. We were following @254camper and @rangisaba. We reached Rangi Saba’s campsite and WOW, we were just stunned by the views. The campsite was on the cliff top with the most stunning views of the Rift Valley as far as the eye could see. Such incredible, wild beauty, just a couple of hours drive from Nairobi! A beautiful Verrueux Eagle soared overhead. We felt so privileged to see this majestic bird.

The next morning we headed to the south end of the cliff to have a look at a couple of potential camping spots. Again, such incredible views! This site overlooked a dry (seasonal) riverbed, a waterfall path carved into the cliff opposite with a pool at the bottom, the colors of the cliff are indescribable! Photographs just don’t do justice to the scenery of this area – you’ve got to see it in person! How privileged I feel to live in a country with such beauty.
